Kathryn E. Miller
Credentials
Katy Miller earned her reputation as a first-rate employment attorney, tough litigator and savvy negotiator over a 25-year career that includes successfully pursuing wrongful termination, class actions, and discrimination cases of all types.
Having spent decades in the courtroom, Katy founded Littleton Alternative Dispute Resolution, Inc., in 1997 to help people avoid expensive, divisive litigation. She has witnessed first-hand the toll litigation takes on individuals and organizations and now works exclusively as an independent neutral in various capacities – mediator, arbitrator, independent investigator, and Consent Decree Monitor.
The bulk of Katy’s practice is by referral. Over 90 percent of the hundreds of mediations she has conducted were resolved at mediation. She currently sits on the arbitration panel for labor and employment cases of the American Arbitration Association. She has mediated cases for the Office of Dispute Resolution for the State of Colorado, and the EEOC, and has significant experience resolving class/collective actions under the FLSA and Colorado Wage Act. In addition to emphasizing employment and workplace disputes, Katy also mediates probate and elder law matters. She serves as a monitor under class action consent decrees/settlement agreements for the federal government.
Katy began her legal career in 1980 at Holland & Hart, and in 1985 joined Miller & Steiert, P.C., which was founded in 1959 by her father, Martin P. Miller. She emphasized employment law and workplace disputes before moving to full-time practice as a neutral.
Katy named in the Best Lawyers in America in the area of Labor and Employment Law, recognized as a member of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals, and has been inducted into the prestigious College of Labor and Employment Lawyers as a neutral. She lectures extensively to lawyers and human resource professionals on a variety of employment and ADR issues, and has written numerous articles on legal issues impacting employers and employees in the workplace. Since 2006, she has been selected by her peers as a Super Lawyer in the areas of employment law and ADR.
It’s that time of year again, when Super Lawyers are announced, and we’re pleased to see two of our attorney-neutrals on the list again. Katy Miller is a Super Lawyer in Alternative Dispute Resolution, while Gary Clexton has been recognized for the work he does representing clients in the field of Employment and Labor law.
Each year, Super Lawyers invites Colorado attorneys to nominate qualified peers for the honor, then the organization evaluates the nominees with 12 separate indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. Candidates are grouped by their primary practice areas and evaluated by independent review panels before Super Lawyers are selected.
Katy Miller selected to the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals (NADN)
Katy Miller has been selected to the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals (NADN), a professional association of mediators and arbitrators notable for their hands-on experience in the field of civil and commercial conflict resolution. With more than 600 members nationwide, it is the largest public roster of experienced ADR attorneys on the internet.
Katy Miller Named ADR Super Lawyer
Katy Miller has been named a Colorado Super Lawyer for the 6th consecutive year! Previously recognized as a Super Lawyer in the area of Employment Law, Katy’s practice is now entirely in the field of Alternative Dispute Resolution and Super Lawyers now recognizes her as tops in that field.
Super Lawyers selects attorneys using a rigorous, multiphase rating process, combining peer nominations and evaluations with third-party research. Each candidate is evaluated on 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement.
Miller Completes Class Action Monitoring
In March 2011, Katy Miller successfully completed her contract with the U.S. Department of Treasury at the U.S. Mint in Denver, where she monitored the employment practices pursuant to a Class Action Settlement Agreement. At a farewell gathering of employees with whom she had worked over the 4 ½ years of the project, Miller (left) posed with Beverly Mandigo-Milne, named Class Representative and now the Chief of Coining Division.
At the farewell get-together at a restaurant near the Denver Mint, Human Resources Officer Laurie Johnson (right) presented Miller with a commemorative display of State Series Quarters. The quarters are produced in Denver.
Statewide ADR Conference November 2010
The 2010 Statewide Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Conference attracted attorneys and ADR professionals.
Katy Miller joined (left to right) John Rymers, Martha Ridgway and Debbie Reinberg in giving a presentation titled, “Facilitating Intergenerational Conflicts” at the annual event.
Katy and the other experts in dispute resolution discussed the complexities and ethical issues that can arise out of intergenerational conflict.
Miller’s reputation as one of the state’s top employment law ADR professionals has contributed to her position in the nascent field of elder law dispute resolution.
Miller emphasized the value in resolving elder disputes early, and the significant role an outside neutral, agreed-to by the parties, can play in bringing parties together.
LADR’s Gary Clexton joined Katy at the day-long, Statewide ADR Conference.
One of two attorneys on the panel, Miller’s 25 years of litigation practice has proved invaluable as she now devotes 100 percent of her practice to serving as a neutral.
Philosophy
Katy’s strong interest in striking a balance between differing perspectives, and her deep understanding of the excessive financial and human costs involved in protracted litigation, have led to her full time commitment to early resolution of employment and elder law disputes.
